Introducing the New Milford Youth Agency’s Mentor Program, brought to you by New Milford High School Junior, Nevan Swanson. Less than a year ago, Nevan approached the Youth Agency with his idea to help younger students with homework issues. Nevan was able to gather support from several adult professionals, including Anne Maitland and Norman Adler who have helped with the planning, training and preparation of the program. He met with New Milford High School staff and gathered several National Honor Society students who were willing to help (Diana Habjan, Maren Harcken, Mark Kugler, Megan Lisee, and Matt Lalli, just to begin with). After working through the details of who? what? where? when? and getting everyone trained and cleared for their new responsibilities, the program is ready to start. With the help of Dr. Thomesello, Principal at SNIS, the applications were sent to teachers to help find students who could benefit from this program. We are starting with a small group of only 5 students, but we hope to grow as the word spreads to both Mentees and Mentors.
Good Luck, Nevan and thank you to everyone who helped make this program possible. If you are a high school student who would like to apply to become a Mentor, or if your child, grade 4th through 6th, can benefit from this program, contact Stacey@youthagency.org or call the Youth Agency at 860-354-0047.
